Deleting User Profiles In Windows 7

Hey Guys,

For those of you having trouble deleting a Windows 7 profile to a domain bound system, never fear, below are some quick and easy steps on how to accomplish this. Note, in Windows 7, there is an extra step involved to get this working vs. what you would do in Windows XP. Hope this helps everyone out, enjoy!!

This can be accomplished thru the User Profiles dialog in System Properties.
  • First, right-click on My Computer and go to Properties.
  • On the left-hand side, click on Advanced System Settings.
  • Under the Advanced tab under User Profiles, click on Settings (see below).
  • Select the profile you want to delete and hit the delete button (see below).

In Windows XP, this would've been all you would've of needed to do for domain bound systems. In Windows 7, there is an extra step (see below). If this step is not done, when trying to re-create the User Profile, rather then get a profile created under the users name you'll get a profile called Temp.

To clear a User profile via registry.
  • Press Start > type Regedit.
  • Navigate to the following registry key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\ProfileList".
  • Under ProfileList, navigate to binary keys like this: S-1-5-21-9876543210-1234567890-4095529-500.
  • On the right side under ProfileImagePath you'll see the username and profile path.
  • Choose the one with the desired user and delete long registry key,  S-1-5-21-9876543210-1234567890-4095529-500 for example.
  • Once you do this, you'll be able to have the user log back in and have a profile created with the users username rather then a Temp profile.
